Caring For Your Child’s Braces

It finally happened, your child got braces. They may have been excited to pick out their colors, or hesitant to start the process, but now they are on their way to straight and beautiful teeth. Whether your child will be in braces for a few months, or a few years, it is important to take proper care of their braces. With proper care and regular visits to our office, your child will be on the fast track to perfect teeth.

Brush Your Braces Carefully

Brushing your teeth is essential for everyone, but especially important for kids with braces. The metal brackets and wires add all sorts of places for bacteria to congregate. They also can make it more difficult for your child to brush and floss properly. If possible, getting an electric toothbrush designed for braces can be a lifesaver. These brushes are able to polish teeth much more efficiently than regular toothbrushes, and make getting around metal wires and brackets a breeze. If getting an electric toothbrush isn’t an option, that is okay. There are many other ways to make sure your child still has healthy teeth with braces. Make sure they are brushing after every meal, as food tends to stick in between the wires. Take extra care to brush around and on each bracket. When flossing, it can be hard to reach all the space between the tooth. It can sometimes be helpful the thread loose floss under the wires in order to reach any missed spots.

Avoid Foods That Could Harm Your Braces

There are some foods that should be avoided while wearing braces. Anything that could damage brackets or wires, or is prone to sticking in them, is on the no-go list. This includes foods like whole apples, popcorn, and sticky candies like toffee and caramel. We also recommend avoiding chewing gum, as it can get stuck in wires and make a mess.
